General Packet Radio Service(gprs)-GPRS can be used for services such as Wireless application protocol (WAP) access, Short Message Service(SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), and for Internet communication services such as email and World Wide Web access.

gprs is available to those mobiles which use GSM.

Global System for Mobile communications(GSM) is a cellular network,which means that mobile phones connect to it by searching for cells in the immediate vicinity.all the phones which use gsm are called 2G(second genertion) phones.

then came 3G phones with broadband facilities,video calls etc..first used by Japan.

in midst there are 2.5G and 2.75G phones also.these r of lesser efficiency than 3G.

2.75G phones use EDGE-(Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) which works faster than gprs.its invented by cingular.

now comes 4G(fourth generation communication systems)where voice,data and streamed multimedia is provided to users on "anytime,anywhere" basis.it can reach upto a speed of 1Gbits/sec
